The Berkshires and Beyond: Fine Art Photography
Robert S. Colantuono: PhotographerBorn in New York in 1952, Robert has adopted the Berkshires as his home since 1974. He and his wife Carol live in North Adams and share their home with their trusted pet Kate. Two children and four grandchildren are frequent visitors. Robert's interest in photography began while he was a student at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania, and soon lead him to the Germain School of photography in New York City. A brief career as a catalogue and wedding photographer convinced him that his interest was in photography as an art, not as a commercial venture. Thus, Robert makes his living as an educator and concentrates his photographic efforts on producing high quality fine art scenic and abstract prints.
Inspired early on by Ansel Adams, Robert first tried his hand in black and white landscapes. Some early successes are still among his best sellers. He still pursues this avenue.
Moving to color, he found himself admiring the work of Ernst Haas, with whom he studied for a time at the Maine photographic workshops.
While still seeking landscapes in both color and black and white, Robert's interest has shifted to include abstract color photographs combining light and form to produce images that both please and challenge the viewer. Many of these photographs are taken during frequent trips to the Caribbean.
Robert's work has been published in numerous local calendars and magazines, has been displayed on a Times-Square billboard, hangs in local hospitals and banks, and has won awards from museums such as Hancock Shaker Village.
Robert is also an accomplished runner and coach, a novice scuba diver, and an avid golfer.
